Use ghee made from butter and slice your sweet potato very thin. Salt if you
want and bake. You have sweet potato chips.
Sarah, a couple questions. what do you use to slice them very thin? do they
come out crispy like potato chips? that’s what I’m looking for.
Thanks!

Wonderful Alzheimers Information

“Denial means more problems for caregivers and their loved ones”
By Risa Levovsky
WWW.ALZHEIMERS-TIPS.COM
As you experience the effects of Alzheimer’s disease or other forms
of memory loss, it may seem like you are riding a scary emotional
roller coaster. The emotions you are facing on this wild ride may
leave you feeling depressed, angry, frustrated, lonely, or helpless.
Take time to identify with and learn about these emotions. With this
new understanding, the ups and downs of the roller coaster will
become less of a wild ride for you.
Denial is an emotion and coping mechanism for many caregivers. Many
husbands and wives may cover up the initial symptoms of their
spouse’s illness. Family members ignore warning signs. They convince
themselves that the changes they see are just a normal part of
aging.

Cynthia, the pumpkin seed dip sounds yummy. The only possible avoid for nonnies
would be in the chicken stock, assuming it’s store bought instead of homemade.
I have yet to find a store bought stock of any kind that’s avoid-free for
nonnies. I’ve found that usually substituting water is okay instead of stock,
so I might try it that way.
Jill, since nonnies often react very strongly to eating avoids and have
additional health challenges as a result, I would say that if one *is* a
nonnie, it’s drastic. I’m glad I made the shift incrementally, and I’m *very
glad* I found out I’m a nonnie. The somewhat subtle shifts (that feel big at
first) are making a big difference in my health and well-being. I found that I
was able to lose quite a bit of weight (approx 30lbs on the O secretor plan)
but the next 40 have been MUCH easier to lose on the nonnie plan.
Kate, great list of what to use with nut butters and dips. Or, in my case, I
just eat the almond butter by the spoonful. Definitely my indulgence of the
moment. Also, wouldn’t sweet potato chips be cool? Anyone have any success with

buckwheat, enjoying food & cooking

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

A note for the nonnies ~ buckwheat is an avoid ~ so substitute some other nummy
and neutral grain (like kamut) in Robin’s yummy-sounding pancake recipe.
Jill, I agree that cod is delish. How did you fix it?
Cynthia, before I started BTD, I actually hated cooking and had a lot of issues
with food (sometimes found it very difficult to get myself to eat). I have
found that eating food that nourishes me and supports my help has increased my
pleasure in both eating and cooking tremendously. Part of my stress about
cooking was from my childhood (my mom hated to cook, my dad refused to cook,
one year I didn’t know if we were going to eat on Thanksgiving and we ended up
at Denny’s!), but another large part was that many times I would put all this
energy into cooking and still feel like shit afterwards. Not much of a
motivation to cook! Now, I feel so good on this plan that I have begun to
appreciate the relaxation and art of cooking. I have also found that working
within the parameters of the diet really focuses me and challenges me to come
up with creative, delicious meals. I rely heavily on spices! My spice

Donna Mae ~ greens recipe

Donna Mae,
Thank you so much for all that testing! Would it be okay if I posted your
recipe to my nonnie list? We are always looking for good ways to eat our
greens :-) Paulita

Health Protocols On Dr. D’s Website

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Dr. D has added a lot of new content to his website, including the
blood type link disease information and health protocols like what
are found in his Encyclopedia. I was just looking at some of the
protocols on the website and the interesting thing I noticed is that
some of the recommendations in the health protocols have changed
compared to what is in the Encyclopedia.

Don, my vote for the next sweet potato baking experiment is muffins. I miss
muffins like crazy! Or biscuits ?? I love those, too!
I just realized today that spelt is an avoid for non-secretors. Thought I would
mention that for any other nonnies who were reading all those yummy-sounding
spelt recipes.
I made kamut biscuits this weekend and they were pretty darn tasty considering
that I used no milk. They were 100% nonnie-compliant :-) Paulita

kamut biscuit recipe

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Quite good, full-flavored and not heavy.
Adapted from Quick Drop Biscuits recipe in Joy of Cooking:
1 c kamut flour
1-1/4 tsp baking powder** (see recipe below)
1/4 tsp finely ground sea salt
3 tbsp cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces
3/4 c Gerolsteiner sparkling mineral water
Whisk together thoroughly first three ingredients.
Cut butter into dry ingredients with a pastry blender until butter
pieces are no bigger than a pea.
Add sparkling mineral water.
Mix until the dry ingredients are well moistened.
Batter should be moist and sticky but not smooth.
Use a teaspoon to form walnut-sized scoops of batter; use another
spoon to scrape the batter onto the baking sheet, spacing about 1-

Liver Choice

Monday, June 18th, 2007

Dr. D recommends calf liver as highly beneficial. What about
standard beef liver? My dilemma is that I can either buy calf liver
from my standard grocery store or I can get grass-fed beef liver from
a regional farm. Which should I get? Is either one a bad choice?
