Kids and “new” foods/nutritionist and a little about me
Robin wrote:”As for the two little ones not eating their veggies, I’m
inclined to
say it’s a phase they will grow out of so just keep offering and
don’t force them to eat anything”
You are so correct.
****One great therapist said that the “average” kid might take as many as 40
times of offereing a new food before trying it and liking it.*****
I watch a 9 year old classmate of my kids a few days a week, and his way of
eating is very different from ours. Many times, he would say he was not
hungry at dinner or “I don’t like that kind of____” I would tell him that
when he wanted to try it, he could if any was left. More often than not, he
would come around to table, take a seat, and eat like the rest of us!
My last child was born with an internal defect which made for a long road to
“oral” eating. Therefore, I have spent plenty of time with feeding
specialists, OT, ST, and other pros who deal with kids and food. I noticed
that in LR4YBT, one of the first “Testimonial” sections was from a Mother of
twins, one of the twins had the defect that Truman was born with- Congenital
Diaphragmatic Hernia. Made me feel right at home getting into that book.
When Truman was struggling so with feeding, my Mom instincts told me not to
follow the nutritionists’ advice to “supplement” Truman’s intake with
Carnation Instant Breakfast and the likes of Pediasure (corn sweetener
deluxe/Hormone milk filled nastiness.). After almost 3 years with her, she
tended to ask MY advice about certain supplements and diet reccomendations
for particular clients who were not responding to standard food pyramid
advice.. (We needed her for measuring and weighing Tru.) If I had know then
what I am learning now…. I will send her a copy of LR if I can find it on
cassette. She is a workaholic and travesl alot to see all of her clients.
OK, my first day of MEAT breakfast- I will have to work on my head to get
veggies in the AM. Feeling good. Got on treadmill most days this week (YES!)
Had company, they brought chips and cream cheese poppy seed cake. Chips did
not pose any problem- even thought the brand and style were my old faves.
Cake and ice cream was a little tougher, but just calling them “avoid foods”
aloud made the temptation weaken. Also, dramatizing killing friends and any
one else that ate the dessert food seemed to diffuse the edge-LOL. I went
ahead and ate an organic Fuji with a tablespoon of organic almond butter
(YUM!) while they ate their poison.. Two nuetrals in place of a ton of
avoids! Also, played the game Pictionary for the first time. Fun game.
Hubby, cake.ice cream eater type A, awoke with screaming headache this AM.
Vengeance is mine-LOL.
This was long,
