it’s good to be back!

Greetings all *waves* Hope everyone is doing okay. Most of you probably don’t
remember me because I only posted a couple of times before disappearing this
past fall. I’ve been away for a while for various reasons, some of them beyond
my control–but that’s life, yes? So it’s time to get back into the
conversation.
To be honest, over the last few months I’ve been eating wheat and too many
carbs, and feeling horrible as a result. So, as someone said in a recent email,
you can start over every morning, and I did so today. I know by the end of the
week I’ll be wondering why I ever stopped eating right in the first place.
What’s been interesting about eating carbs again is how they tend to numb me out
mentally. I think William Dufty talks about that effect in his book Sugar Blues,
though I’m not really sure the European monarchies intentionally got their
peasantry hooked on potatoes for the soporific effect, as he suggests. Then
again, regarding authority, you can never be too paranoid ;) At any rate, carbs
make me slow and stupid, and I don’t like it. So now when I’m tempted to grab a

comfort-food caramel roll, I’ll remember how it felt to walk around in a fog,
and abstain. I’m giving up my drug of choice!
I think it was Axel who said (and I’m paraphrasing like mad, please forgive me
Axel dear) that his sixth sense seemed to be opening up more as he ate HB foods
and exercised. That has been my experience also. I think when your body is in
good health (or steadily improving), in tune with nature and the rhythms of the
ecosystem you live in, it opens up old “hardwired” abilities we believe we’ve
lost or never had. Just a thought, anyway.
As far as food combining goes, I’m finding simple is best for me. If I eat meat
for breakfast, it’ll be lean beef or buffalo with a little bit of steamed
vegetable, usually broccoli or onion, sometimes collards if I can get good fresh
greens. If it’s fruit, it’s just fruit–usually some black cherries, a ripe
mango, blueberries, or a banana. I don’t drink anything a half hour before or
after eating at any meal. I’m also slowly giving up iced drinks. Iced herb tea
might have one or two cubes in it, but not a whole glassful. I’m finding that
chilled drinks make my stomach hurt and cause indigestion and queasiness.
Dinners are usually light and consist mostly of protein. I’m finding that fish
is just right. (I have a killer recipe for Tweed Kettle, salmon poached in wine,
that is fabulous with a spring greens salad!) But I keep it simple, usually two
foods and that’s it. That seems to work best for me. But that’s just me . . . my
advice would be to experiment and find out what your body needs. It’ll tell you
if you listen with some respect.
I also wanted to say a big THANK YOU for the tip on Stash mango-passionfruit
tea! One of our local health food stores has it and I’m going to try it. If it
makes good cooled tea, I’ll be in heaven. *chuckle* It’s good to be back!
