Water, or, H2-Oh!

Hey Cave-men & Cave-women friends!
Here’s a fun experiment!
If you don’t have a water filter or some other source of tasteless water, get
one (many parts of U.S. don’t have the best tap water). I have a Pur water
filter, for example. If you don’t want to bother with getting a water filter and
want to do the experiment purely for taste get yourself some distilled water,
NOT mineral water.
Fill two large containers with the tasteless water, say, two liter sized glass
bottles (I like to re-use my liquor & wine bottles). Then, put about 1/4
teaspoon of REAL sea salt into one container. Real sea salt actually smells of
the sea. Many real salts are a dull off-white or gray. Real salts clump. Real
salts taste like the ocean, not just salty.
The next part of the experiment is sharing your mineralized water with your
unsuspecting friends! Listen to what they say. Do they comment on the water’s
sweetness? Do they think it is, for some odd reason, “tasty” water? Then you can

allow yourself to finally taste the difference in the water. What do you think?
We should have a water party. Everyone can bring their own water and we can
share and compare. We could have prizes for the best water. We could discuss
water filtration/purification methods and tell our favorite water stories.
We could make our own sauna or sweat lodge and sweat a lot and get real thirsty
and then we could all drink lots of our water. Doesn’t that sound like fun? We
could lick each other’s sweating skin and gauge each other’s salinity,
diagnosing sodium deficiencies the fun way!
What do you think, Os? Good ideas? Let’s discuss!

Our well had a problem in 5/03 and they did work on it. They added bleach
down into it because there was flaked rust floating in it. I still taste the
chlorine, and we do have a water filter system (big one in the basement) and
also we have a water softener. Yech. I buy bottled water.
I will try the experiment when my head cold is gone and my taste buds and
    nose are back in business.

Unless you’re buying that Japanese ice burg bottled water, chances are that
your bottled water is just plain water run through a water filter (what they
    call a rain maker).

    Hi, Max!
I buy my drinking and cooking water in bulk, at a store that distills it
and shoots some ozone through it. The ozone brings it to life. It is much
tastier, even without salt, than regular distilled water.

I love Aquafina. Reverse osmosis is great. We even have one of
    those filter/machines at work.

That’s great. I was commenting on the lady who has both a filter system and
a water softener and still buys bottled water.

Nah, I buy bottled for drinking at home (well water) and the
    filter system is at work.
And my comment was about different types of water - not that any
one is better, just what I like.

Has anyone tried the water filtered pitchers at Walmart made by Brita.
They’re great and you can use local water. I want to try the sea salt thing
    too.
    That sounds very interesting.

My dad sent me one recently but I was disconcerted by the
charcoal that floats free of the filter up above - even after a
couple of pitchers. So I just use it for making hot water for
tea and such since it’s easier on the pot.
