Bread Machine Tip

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

I made the Herb Bread recipe from CR4YT last week and had the
drastic collapse that seems to happen often with spelt. So this
time I changed the setting from the Basic White (recommended in
the book) to the Rapid setting and it worked wonderfully. Rapid
only kneads and raises once so it doesn’t overwork the flour.

Q’s on greens recipe

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Leslie, you are probably speaking for many people on this group when you ask
about pineapple juice and honey. I do not follow food combining, as mostly I
eat only meat and green veggies, so I don’t need to worry about the other
stuff and when to eat it. I do eat raw fruit, and I do eat that separately from
my meals.
As for pineapple juice, and if those who follow food combining should not add
it to the meal, I just can’t say. I do not have that knowledge. I prepared
the recipe as best I could for this group, which is BTD-specific. I suppose
those who follow additional restrictions will have to check my recipe against
their own guidelines.
That is a good question, if heating honey would destroy it’s nutritional
properties. Again, I don’t know. I did prepare the recipe a few times with
honey
(the original recipes called for quite a bit of sugar). However, I knew that
the non-secretors can’t have the honey, so I didn’t think it was a good idea

Stay tuned…..

braised greens

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

the greens recipe sounds great,, thanks! is heating honey ok?,,, I’ve
read that this destroys its healthy properties .. and the pineapple juice w/
veggies might go against food combining principles?…
Starting to lean towards raw vegetable eating lately..(seems that’s what our
early ancestors must have done- and cooking seems to loose the good
enzymes… (that raw cook chef, Juliani from CA says, “for food to be raw and
living
and therefore the most nutritious and in the form evolutionarily intended for
human consumption, it must never be subjected to heat above 120 degrees”.
Have you guys seen any evidence to back this up? is it ok to eat organic
turnips, sweet potatoes, beets, etc. raw? and does anyone have a good veg.
only juice drink recipe? Always questions,, have a healthy day, Leslie

buckwheat, enjoying food & cooking

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

A note for the nonnies ~ buckwheat is an avoid ~ so substitute some other nummy
and neutral grain (like kamut) in Robin’s yummy-sounding pancake recipe.
Jill, I agree that cod is delish. How did you fix it?
Cynthia, before I started BTD, I actually hated cooking and had a lot of issues
with food (sometimes found it very difficult to get myself to eat). I have
found that eating food that nourishes me and supports my help has increased my
pleasure in both eating and cooking tremendously. Part of my stress about
cooking was from my childhood (my mom hated to cook, my dad refused to cook,
one year I didn’t know if we were going to eat on Thanksgiving and we ended up
at Denny’s!), but another large part was that many times I would put all this
energy into cooking and still feel like shit afterwards. Not much of a
motivation to cook! Now, I feel so good on this plan that I have begun to
appreciate the relaxation and art of cooking. I have also found that working
within the parameters of the diet really focuses me and challenges me to come
up with creative, delicious meals. I rely heavily on spices! My spice

chocolate chip cookies…

Not even chocolate chip cookies can compare.
They gave that recipe for carob chip cookies in the book. I made them
yesterday, they were very good. Should have greased the pan though…

wheat questions

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Hi all,
I am not going to argue that we Os should be eating wheat. I am feeling
great without it!
What I want to ask and clarify is about the affects of wheat. I know of the
bad stuff that happens when eating white flour products, as it has the
higher glycemic index and jacks the glucose up quickly then plummets it back
down. Info about how crappy white flour is, is abundant and easy to find.
White flour also has near zero nutritional benefits and less fiber. I
thought, though, that whole wheat flour didn’t do this same bad thing to the
glucose level. (I had our family eating whole wheat bread, homemade and also
oatmeal breads with whole wheat flour and thought that was pretty darn good.
The reason I was avoiding store bought bread before I began the ER diet was
because my kids are allergic/sensitive/intolerant to corn, soy and dairy. It
is near impossible to find a store bought bread that doesn’t contain those
ingredients. Nearly all breads now have soybean oil if not soy flour.) Both

Thank you was re: giving up wheat

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Hi everyone,
A big thank you to everyone who replied to my question about giving up
wheat. This is a very supportive list. You have given me a lot of food for
thought. I can see I will have to really plan the food for the first couple
of weeks so I’m not hungry and reaching for the wrong food. I’m so glad so
many people responded and were able to give me a few different perspectives.
I’m sure I’ll be asking some more questions soon :-) Annette

several questions

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Hello,
I gave my intro a few weeks back. Thanks for the feedback. I keep
plugging along after two really compliant months on ER, then a less
compliant month, and I’m ready to get motivated again….a few
questions as I think about ER as a lifestyle change:
1) Do you still enjoy eating? Or are you all at a point of
accepting food more as fuel for the body, a necessity rather than a
pleasure?
2) Do you still enjoy cooking?
3) I need snack ideas…I love dried berries and nuts, but find that
I eat too many, and need other quick ideas…I tend to eat fewer
larger meals rather than many smaller ones/snacks as I’d like to do.
4) How important do you find drinking liquids before/after, and not
during meals? Any research on cold versus warm/hot liquids?
That will do for now,
