o and vegetarian - new to group

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

I’m looking for support and information on being O and vegetarian. My
religious beliefs are such that eating meat is out of the question,
yet I would like to give this a try. Are there any other veggie O’s
out there? I’ve searched the internet but all I’ve found are ill-
informed nay sayers who haven’t bothered reading the books.
Can anyone pint me in the right direction?

Welcome Marjorie

Welcome to our group. Everyone here is very helpful, and we share our
experiences and knowledge.
In 1998, I temporarily lost the sight in my left eye, and after an MRI and
other exams, it was determined I had optic neuritis, which as you probably know,
is an indicator of MS. With 3 days of prednisone via IV, I recovered about
90% of the sight in that eye, but that was when they told me about the optic
neuritis/MS connection. At that time, they also told me my MRI showed scarring
patterns on my brain that would be consistent with MS.
On Jan.1, 1999, I started the Blood Type Diet (I am O+). I gained many
benefits including losing 25 pounds in one year, and many
health/energy/emotional
benefits. Since that time, my MS has been benign/inactive. I was asked about a
year ago to participate in a study with Kaiser/Biogen, and I take an
experimental dose of a new form of interferon once per week. So far, as I say,
I have

Hey all,
I am really enjoying the variety of ways that folks like to eat particular
vegetables and greens. I am definitely looking forward to trying out Susan’s
steamed vegetable medley w/ fresh ground ginger and lemon zest.
Don,
You mentioned you like collard greens a lot ~ how do you usually fix them?
Also, about how long and at what temperature do you roast the root veggies in
olive oil? In your soup, do you brown the meat first? Do you simmer it on the
stove, or use a crockpot? What temperature, how long? What do you use for
tomato sauce? I ask because most of the store varieties I’ve seen have avoids,
at least for nonnies. Thanks for more specifics!!

Carrot, Ginger, and Beet Soup - Recipe

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Here is a recipe I found on my Eat Well Naturally letter today. It looks good
for O’s if you just leave off the suggested sour cream at the end. It also uses
the grated ginger just like you suggested when turnips are added, Susan.

You can’t do better than beets and carrots for sweet, earthy winter

orange rind to make an intriguing soup that will surprise and delight your whole

What a tasty way to get your beta-carotenes and minerals: this is

Don, thanks for the tip on the sweet potato flour and trying a local ethnic
grocery. Don’t know how I was searching before having so much trouble!
Jane, I’ve noticed a huge improvement in how restaurant staff respond to my
requests for veggies instead of the potato, etc, since Atkins got so much in
the news. I love it.
Linda, I sure notice that after I indulge my cravings, they are WORSE. But they
get better the longer I go without, especially if I’m not around too much of
them. I had a hard time during the Christmas holidays at the office. So much
sugary junk food.
Susan, thanks for the ideas of what you like to eat. I’m always on the look-out
for fresh approaches.
Marjorie, I would highly recommend finding out your secretor status (available
as a spit test at www.dadamo.com) and getting your hands on the book Live Right
4 Your Type. It has portion frequencies by secretor status, and some food
values change depending on secretor status. Glad you found us!

Fava Beans

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

Please could someone confirm what type of bean a fava bean is? I am not
familiar with it in the UK, is it a butter or a broad bean or something
different?
Thank you
Carolyn

Thanks for all your great suggestions. It makes me hungry just reading
them!
Out of curiosity, how long does it take to not crave your old eating
habits? We went through a fast food drive through for my son yesterday
and the smell was so good and the urge to get that diet pop was huge…
But I successfully did it by grabbing my canned seltzer and popping in
trail mix…
