yellow skin

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

I remember when my first son was very young, probably
around 1 year, I was starting him on foods and apparently
overfed him carrots! He loved them! His skin got a
yellowish cast to it too. So I had to give him more of a
variety! He is 22 now, fair skinned and still loves
carrots!

Strength cond. + Endurance conditioning = win

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

J Strength Cond Res. 2003 May;17(2):393-401.
Early phase changes by concurrent endurance and strength training.
Balabinis CP, Psarakis CH, Moukas M, Vassiliou MP, Behrakis PK.
Department of Experimental Physiology, School of Medicine, University of Athens,
Greece.
To compare regimens of concurrent strength and endurance training, 26 male
basketball players were matched for stature, body composition, and physical
activity level. Subjects completed different training programs for 7 weeks, 4
days per week. Groups were as follows: (a) the strength group (S; n = 7) did
strength training; (b) the endurance group (E; n = 7) did endurance training;
(c) the strength and endurance group (S + E; n = 7) combined strength and
endurance training; and (d) the control group (C; n = 5) had no training. The S
+ E group showed greater gains in Vdot;o(2)max than the E group did (12.9% vs.
6.8%), whereas the S group showed a decline (8.8%). Gains were noted in strength
and vertical jump performance for the S + E and S groups. The S + E group had

Food Addiction

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

I saw an article in the paper several weeks ago about a new
book “Breaking the Food Seduction: The Hidden Reasons Behind Food
Cravings and 7 Steps to End Them Naturally” by Dr. Neal Barnard,
adjunct professor at the George Washington School of Medicine and
founder of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, which
promotes preventative medicine through good nutrition.
The point I wanted to relay was that it said that food addicitons can
be conquered because the taste buds can only remember for three
weeks. Avoid the trigger food for three weeks and you will lose your
taste for it.
Those of us that have eliminated wheat, sweets, or other problem
foods from our diet probably already know this. However, I thought
it was possibly useful confirming information for us when talking to
others about the the possibility of trying the BTD. If they give the
BTD an honest month’s try the cravings/addictions will be gone and

not a Gemini

Friday, March 16th, 2007

Hi Michael,
Have been enjoying your posts and thoughts. I hope you keep a journal. To
answer your question, I am not a Gemini, but a Taurus (May 19). By the way, I
too am naturally nocturnal, although 20 years of working early morning hours
(up at 4am) seems to have reset my “clock”. Before that, I always worked swing
shift, stayed up till 4am, and slept till 10am. I rarely sleep 8 hours,
unless I’m sick.

another nocturnal O

Diane:
I have always been somewhat nocturnal.
And continue to be.
I am simply more awake in the evening.
I only get 6 or so hours of sleep a night and rarely get to sleep before
midnight.
I am not sleepy during the day or low energy either.
This system works for me.

two points of view

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

I have been reading Thomas and “Katchy71″ exchanging points of view, and
would like to offer this observation: That both are absolutely correct, they
are
just not speaking the same language!
Thomas, like many of us that have been following the BTD for an extended
period, has progressed from Eating Right to Living Right. There is a holistic
aspect to Dr. D’s theories. When one reads his books, one finds that he
discusses not only diet/exercise, but issues such as stress. The modern world
we live
in is comprised of far more stress, and far more complexity, than our minds
have yet evolved to process. Thus those of us who have assiduously followed
and practiced the Live Right principles tend to have also meandered into studies
of mind/body connections, studies of the principles of wellness, and have
spent a great deal of time examing and re-ordering our personal values and
priorities. As a result, many of us have made radical changes not only in our
