individuality and the O food plan
Hey Alisha! Nice to meet a fellow lurker
How’s it going with the puppy? My
roomie is an animal trainer and teaches dog obedience courses, so we both know
what you’re going through right now *chuckle*
At one point I did have all the books, though somewhere in my last move I lost
everything but Live Right and Eat Right. That’s okay, I’ll just get new copies.
My old ones were pretty beat up anyway *chuckle*
Everyone has their own way of dealing with the carb addiction and needs to find
their own path, just as Dianne says. I like your way because it doesn’t put my
body into shutdown mode from withdrawal. I’m sort of following your idea only
substituting Wasa bread for Ezekiel, and it’s working. I’ll also pick up a
bottle of glutamine next weekend when I get paid, and order some bladderwrack
off the website. Way back when I was eating a lot better I used to take Susun
Weed’s advice and keep dried seaweed in the cupboard. There’s a black lacy
type–I can’t remember the name right now (yay for menopause! *g*), that’s
pretty tasty. Whenever I would get a craving for potato or tortilla chips I’d
munch on seaweed instead.
Right now my biggest problem is finding something to drink at work. (I’m on
graveyard shift, four ten-hour shifts a week with three days off.) I do drink
bottled water but would like to find something else just for variety. I’m
kicking aspartame, but can’t do seltzer or sparkling water right now as the
sodium makes my feet swell up. Any suggestions? I’ve heard Aquafina does
flavored waters, has anyone heard of them?
The information on fibro from Dr. D was really intriguing. My diagnosis is
what’s called incomplete fibromyalgia combined with chronic fatigue syndrome,
with the beginnings of rheumatoid arthritis (which makes sense for someone who
loves bread as much as I do). My roomie’s diagnosis is for full-blown fibro. she
has the classic trigger points etc.She takes a variety of meds and also wears a
duragesic patch, all to keep the pain at a bearable level. I think the food plan
will make an even bigger and more dramatic difference for her, if I can get her
to move from eating pork and canteloupe to beef and neutral fruits. One step at
a time, it’s a major accomplishment that she’s not eating a plateful of pbjs on
Wonder bread twice a day, which is what she was living on for a long time. }:P
Good luck Alisha and keep posting, I’d love to know how things are going for
you. Thanks again for the advice and encouragement everyone, it really does
help! –Robin

Crystal Geyser makes a Juice Squeeze that has no sodium, has no avoids, and 105
calories per serving. Gerlosteiner sparkling mineral water has 30 mgs. sodium
per serving. What I do is buy seltzer water and add a little cherry juice to it
for flavor. It has no sodium. HTH

I hope this isn’t too obvious, but I’m a huge fan of herbal teas, hot or
iced. Rosehips and hibiscus are highly beneficial, flavorful and full of
vitamin C (as long as you make sure not to use boiling water since the
extreme heat can kill it). There’s also Rooibus (red tea), roasted
dandelion root tea (a little like coffee but with less body), green tea,
etc.
Good luck!

ARRRGGG!!!! Does that answer your question? He is a real sweetie, but the
potty training thing is really frustrating. Not to mention that my 10 year
old son (he’s autistic) is taking full advantage of the fact I have my
hands full with his “little brother”. Oreo (our dog) is only 4 months old
but I think we should have called him Dr teeth! I shudder to think what it
is going to be like in a couple of months! (All the books say they really
go into teething mode then) Add to that he panics if he can’t see me, and
my hands are really full! It’s his breed, he was bred to be especially
affectionate to work with handicapped children. We got him for my son, but
Sean (my son) is having a rough time with the biting, so I am really Oreo’s
only company during the day. It’s exausting!
Great! I think that’s the important thing. At least in the beginning. I
promise you it gets better.
You know, I can’t stand seaweed. I have tried different kinds and I just
can’t take it. That was why I started taking the bladderwrack. I know it
has important nutrients for us Os but YEEACH!
Wow, you really need the energy in this diet to get through that schedule!
Drinks are a bit tricky for me as well. As I said I am totally hooked on
Coke. I never trusted aspartame, so I don’t have that to worry about. I do
not like plain water however, a big problem. I am sure it is due to
drinking Coke almost exclusively since childhood. I have just recently been
checking out some solutions. First, seltzer is carbonated water, no salt.
Club soda has salt, but not seltzer. Last time I was on the diet I flavored
water with juice or Torani syrups, the kind that you use in specialty
coffees. They are cane sugar based, so no corn syrup! Other syrups do have
corn syrup so read the label if you want to try this. They have lots of
fruit flavors and just a touch in regular water is really nice. I get mine
at Smart and Final, it’s cheaper there. I recently found Ginger Spice
Torani syrup at Cost Plus. I have tried that with seltzer and it was really
good! Kind of like a spiced ginger ale, it wouldn’t work for you if you are
following the spice avoids though. Whole Foods brand (365) of soda is cane
juiced based. (they just changed because GMO corn is so prevalent right
now) I am pretty sure Whole Foods is nation wide. There is a soda called
China Cola that is pretty good and they use a bunch of different Chinese
herbs to get the cola taste. I have a recipe for a Coke clone that uses
different oils like lemon and clove that is suppose to be really good. I
haven’t made it yet but I plan to. If you want a copy let me know and I
will post it. You make the syrup (enough for something like 44 cups of
prepared soda) and combine it with seltzer. I also found fruit flavored
non-carbonated water by a company called Glaceau . And the Crystal Geyser
flavored fizzy water and teas that others have mentioned.
Well it’s an improvement anyway! It can be frustrating though. My best
friend since 3rd grade is an O that has always had a weight problem. She is
having back pain other problems due to it and she is only 34. Yet I cannot
get her on the diet. I am hoping that when she sees me go through the
transformation this time it might finally take! It must be really
frustrating for you since she has so many health problems. Maybe when she
sees the difference in your health she will give it a serious go. I finally
got my husband to go on it and do the beneficial thing. He is an A with
weight problem, and doing well.
Well I hope I haven’t rambled too much! I will keep my fingers crossed for
both of your sakes.

Alisha,
I would like the recipe for the coke clone. I have been putting a small amount
of juice in the seltzer water but would like a new taste. I like the Whole
Foods 365 drinks also, but don’t get them very often. Thanks for all of your
suggestions.

Hi Nancy,
Alisha
I still haven’t made it and it is going to need a few adjustments.
Here is the origional recipe:
6C Granulated Sugar
2C Corn Syrup
8 NoDoz tablets, crushed to powder
2tsp Citric Acid
7C Boiling Water
1Tbsp Lime Juice
1/2tsp Vanilla
1Drop Lemon Oil
1Drop Orange Oil
1Drop Cinnamon (Cassia) Oil
Combine first 4 ingredients in a large pitcher or bowl. Add the
boiling water and stir until sugar is dissolved and mixture is clear.
Strain through a paper towle lined strainer to remove the Nodoze sediment.
Add the lime juice, vanilla, lemon oil, orange oil, and cassia oil
to the syrup and stir.
Cover and chill for several hours until cold.
To make a soda, add 1/4 cup of cold syrup to 1 cup of cold soda
water. Stir gently, add ice, enjoy. Makes 44 10oz servings.
He says to be sure to add the exact amount of oils, if they don’t
come with a dropper get one at a drugstore. That is crucial to the Coke
taste. I didn’t include the food coloring to color it, so it will be clear.
You can find the oils at a health food store. He says the Cassis oil is the
hardest to find, it is often sold for aromatherapy.
Now, I plan to replace the corn syrup with 3/4C sugar, and leave
out the Nodose. I may just leave the extra sugar out. I know that orange
oil is an avoid, but I feel I will get such a small amount that it won’t
really matter. The other problem is the high carb amount, but one a day
shouldn’t kill me.

Thanks, Alisha. I may try to amend it to not have avoids in it.
