favorite kitchen tools
My favorites are the old basics. I own few appliances and “modern”
conveniences. They clutter the kitchen counter/cupboards, and just do what I
can do with a good cutting board, set of sharp knives, a few wooden spoons, a
spatula, a whisk and a few decent pots and pans. All those appliances are so
you can cook and not actually do anything. Well, I like to cook. I like to
handle the food. I like the time I spend planning and preparing a meal.
Cooking is a process, it is more to me than a meal slapped down to be gobbled
up. I own mostly old-fashioned stuff I inherited from my mother and
grandmother, or bought at Salvation Army (like all my Pyrex).
I do own a bread machine, I use it to beat the dough, but then I bake the
bread in the oven. It’s nasty when you make it in the machine. I have made
spelt bread this way, plus rye bread. Just bought some quinoa flour, will be
giving that a try.
I also own a crock pot, and do use it for making meals, as I can leave it on
all day, and have a good dinner when I come home.
Lastly, I have an ice cream maker, and do make the big avoid from time to
time, it’s a weakness of mine. Just made fresh strawberry. Woo Hoo!
Oh, while we’re on avoids, I do own a French Press coffee pot, and I use it
far more often than a sensible O should.
I occasionally use the microwave. Why does everyone keep saying it’s bad for
you, but they don’t explain why? I’ll keep using it till someone tells me
whassup.

I broil in the oven (wildman–just had to replace my broiler element) and
grill outside. I also fry, boil, and bake. I recently purchased a set of
Calaphon non-stick pans and skillets because I got tired of scrubbing pans
and skillets. A great buy in my opinion. Cleans quickly.
I use George sparingly and mostly for vegetables. I also use the slow cooker
sparingly for stews etc. because, living alone, I end up throwing a lot of
leftovers out unless I have company or family over. My bread machine has
been inactive since I found out I am a non-secretor. I miss fresh-baked
bread. I don’t boil meat usually because I prefer the crisp fat resulting
from broiling or frying. Even if I’m making a roast in the slow cooker, I’ll
brown it in a skillet to get that “cooked fat” taste.
As a guy, I crave the protein and fat and only eat the vegetables and salads
as side dishes. Red meat is a staple for me and if I substitute chicken or
fish too much I find myself getting hungry in the evening. I do eat pork
occasionally but make sure it’s suitably burned.
