newbie on board! (*long* message)
Hello everyone.
This’ll be a bit long-winded, I apologize in advance. I just started
the ER4YT diet a couple of weeks ago- I’m an O, obviously, since I’m
here; I don’t know my secretor status, but I’ll try to see what my Lewis
status tests out to one of these days. For the moment, I’m assuming
secretor, since that is more statistically likely. I’ve tried to dump
most of the avoids fairly quickly, offloading all my nice vegetarian
pantry items at my A boyfriend’s place. I am really going to miss some
of that stuff. This is pretty amusing, since he is more fond of meat
than I am…
I had a feeling meat was going to turn up in my eating plan after I
noticed how much more alert and energetic I was on the Atkins diet a
couple of years ago. I didn’t like the near-absence of veggies; I used
to be vegetarian, and I also felt this could not be good as a sustained
way of eating. I went off Atkins, the weight came back, and I forgot
how much better I felt sans carbohydrates…
So time passes, and I find myself reading ER4YT, and remembering that I
did function well on meat, even if it didn’t appeal to me much on an
ecological or culinary basis. When I was a kid, I’d happily eat any
veggies or fish put before me, but had some long evenings when dad
wouldn’t let me leave the table until I ate my meat…
Anyway, I’m working out modifying my eating habits- fortunately I’ve
worked in both a vegetarian restaurant and in a health food store that
specialized in foods for celiac sufferers and people with other dietary
restrictions, so I know some basics. I do have a few questions for
those of you who are more familiar with substitutions/tolerances, and
would appreciate some help…
Are *all* vinegars taboo? I read that corn is often used in making
white vinegar, but what about apple, rice, balsamic, or wine vinegars?
Are there any acceptable vinegars out there? I have 6 types of vinegar
in my pantry as we speak, and while I can sub lemon juice in many
applications, I would dearly miss vinegar, though I will certainly do so
if I must.
One other biggie at this time- I’ve cut out drinking cow and goat milk,
and have limited my flings with Ben and Jerry, but there is one frontier
I cannot yet cross: dairy in my coffee and tea. I know they are both
avoids, but it will be a long time before giving them up, if ever. I
have cut back to a cup, sometimes two, a day, and that’ll have to do for
now. But back to the original issue. I’ve tried Silk creamer and
soymilk, even allowing the verboten vanilla flavor, but it just isn’t
right. I also used to manage a handmade ice cream place- I’m pretty
attuned to dairy stuff. So, given that there’s going to be some
transition here, what is the better-case scenario: cream,half-and-half,
condensed milk, straight moo, or lactose-reduced moo? I can tolerate
non-dairy creamers, but between the corn syrup and the hydrogenated
fats, I figured I was better off with dairy. I have found some with
“sugar” instead of corn syrup- would the small amount of hydrogenated
fat be better than dairy? I am not sure what is more offensive to the O
system- milk fat, milk sugar, or just the proteins in milk. Has anyone
come up with a recipe that gets the mouth feel and general
characteristics of cream or nondairy creamer? Is there an acceptable
non-dairy creamer out there that isn’t just soymilk?
I might be able to help people find sources of replacement foods, since
I still visit the health food store often, and the owner is pretty good
with filling mail orders (via phone), if you are having trouble getting
some things… If any of you are in southern CT, the store (Healthy
Food Plus) is in Milford; I’d be happy to give more info if anyone’s
interested.
Anyway, I’d best sign off, before I wear out my welcome!
take care, all-
Kathleen

Next best thing to do is ready LIVE RIGHT 4 YOUR BLOOD TYPE…..it’s
more updated than ER4YT….HELL, i think he banned tomatoes in the
ER4YT. I think a lot of great choices will be had in LR4YT.
Just get creative with “replacement foods” for your favorite dairy
items.
If you don’t feel fine eating meat on an “ecological” basis, try the
grass-fed varieties. I’ve never eaten them so tell me aobut the taste.
I did miss red-wine vinegar…for cold items? Depends on your
tolerance to acidreflux, that’s about the only NO-NO for vinegar.
Dr. Mercola doesn’t have any negatives about it, but of course he’s a
type A…and type A people will drink a full cup of vinegar
STRAIGHT. Gross. Mercola is just anti-dairy & grain.
Wow. Dairy probs? He heee. In elementary school They used to force
me to drink milk when i was 5 or 6. The only time I have it is once a
week when i get my B&Jerry/ baked items “fix.” I’m hard-core O, but
I never take one philosophy as the absolute truth. LISTEN TO YOUR
BODY…..that’s my recommendation.

Welcome Kathleen,
I might be getting some flack on this, but I can;t stand by soymilk etc.
either, (O’s don’t tolerate soy too well anyway) At our house we just go for the
heavy cream, reasoning it’s just fat and not much else.

Given your choices and if you tolerate dairy well, I would recommend Heavy
Cream. It has no carbs and is almost butter. Then you can wean off cream as
you wean off of coffee. I always drank coffee black but had to drink tea
with both sugar and milk. Over time I’ve learned to drink tea straight. I
find that green tea with lemongrass or lemon is wonderful.
By the way, there are lots of veggies you can eat. You probably know that but
your post sounded a little vegetable desperate.

A lot of vinegar is made from grains.

Whoa…grain vinegar. I just recall back when i was just a
protein/cheese dieter….i’d have the balsamic or red wine
varieties..a little pinch. But i don’t go for salads no more. (i
mean you know the masochistic feeling of having the bitter acerbic
feel in uyour mouth….makes you feel FRENCH).
Give me any vinegar NOW…….i’ll be talking to ya with a MUCOUS
MOUTH(yuck) in 5 seconds!!! Weird reaction, n’est ce pas???

Your secretor status is really important especially if you want to
Love: Rose/Hun
find out what to sub for what. It is useless to use soymilk or apple
vinegar if you are a non-secretor.
vinegars?
The reason why we should avoid vinegars is that they are gastric
irritiants (and only TypeB’s can tolerate). The apple vinegar is an
avoid for non-secretors because it has the apple lectin.
milk,
well done!!!
It took me two and a half years on the diet, but I arrived at it.( At
times I drank 5-6 cups a tea with milk a day.) Give yourself time, it
will come.
cream,half-and-half, condensed milk, straight moo, or lactose-reduced
moo?
all of them contain the milk protein we have the problem with
I am not sure what is more offensive to the O
Milk fat is OK, which is butter, or if we want to be strict, ghee aka
clarified butter. Milk sugar and milk protein ( mostly the protein )
that we have problem with.
Also avoid hydrogenated fats as much as possible.
