In search of the Postmodern Diet

‘As I see It’ Topic For 5 September 2002
In search of the Postmodern Diet
This week’s Time magazine featured a slightly overweight figure holding
two plates of food out to the camera. The plate on her right contained
pasta, a sprig of parsley, no sauce, and a few slices of red and yellow
pepper. The plate on her right contained what appears to be a 16 ounce
porterhouse steak. Above the plates of food the title slug read: “What
REALLY makes you fat?” while underneath the picture the subtitle
promised “the latest science on how your body handles carbs and fats.”
Unfortunately, like the steak, the Time article was all sizzle and about
as unsatisfying as the plate of pasta without the sauce. Far from
getting ‘the latest science’ on what makes us fat, we are again treated
to the Atkins versus Ornish, both of whom are beginning to have that
comfortable feel about dissing each other that reminds me of the golden
days of Siskle and Ebert.

Food Lists

Thursday, March 23rd, 2006

I know I should know this by now…..where’s the most current food list
located?
When I started BT at the end of May, my ND just told me not to worry about
it all for now….just avoid wheat, corn, dairy, which I’ve done (although
not wonderfully on the wheat). But now I’m ready to move into the next step.

Hives

Thursday, March 23rd, 2006

I have a friend who had a bad case of hives and she traced it to her hair
dye. Over several months, the hives went away. Of course, she wouldn’t
agree to use the diet to help cleanse her. She thought I was crazy but I
reminded her that I wasn’t the one with the hives.

Axel’s Rantings

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

Have read with interest the frustration with the willful ignorance and blind
obedience of many people to long “established” nutritional dogma. I think
there are two roadblocks to acceptance of Blood Type/Low Carb diets: Naivete
and Emotion.
By naivete I mean the average person has complete trust in the nutritional
guidelines promoted by the government, and the food and medical industries.
People can’t believe that the infamous pyramid was put together by
agricultural and food industry lobby groups, and each group’s place on the
pyramid is indicative NOT of the relative importance of that food group, but
rather of each group’s purchasing power. The profit margin for ranchers is
much smaller than that of grain producers, and with less dollars, one
industry has less clout than the other. So the pyramid is taught in schools
and universities and is accepted as “fact”. But it’s all a game of politics
and influence. The same groups that had enough money to buy the big base of
the pyramid are spending a lot more to be sure they keep their position.

Newbie to the list… Hi!

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

Hi there! I just began the blood type diet about 3 weeks ago after
seeing a naturopath for chronic hives and swellings.
I began having hives in January and it increased until Easter Monday
when I had my first swelling of the lips. Very scary… went to
emerg. I went to an allergist and was on hydroxyzine and other anti-
histamines to try to bring down the histamine level in my body, but
even months later, things were the same. Every evening I would start
to get itchy and every morning I was covered in hives. Rough
nights! Then, the swellings topped it off. I would sometimes have
swollen eyes, swollen lips, and even swollen throat… the latter
requiring a trip to the emergency room. I now carry an epi-pen,
benadryl, and zantac 75 (has an H2 blocker in it that worked well the
last time in emerg.) in my purse.
After filling out a 6 page questionnaire for this naturopath, and an
appointment with him, he put me on 3 herbs (in tincture form) and

New to Diet

Monday, March 20th, 2006

Opinion alert!!!!! This is my opinion only. I am an engineer not a food
prophet.
If you really want to see if this diet works, my only recommendation to you
new folks is to shift your diet completely to Highly Beneficial for a full 30
days (some people say 2 weeks but I firmly believe in 30 days). Absolutely
no cheating. No candy bars, coffee, bread, etc. Don’t “nibble” away the
effect. When I did it I also stayed away from any other new supplements,
herbs, remedies, ideas, etc., and felt the complete effect of the benefits of
the diet. For me, it was very dramatic. I felt a tremendous improvement in
health and a significant increase in energy. Weight loss was and is moderate
but that is a secondary benefit to improved health.
After 30 days, eat an avoid like a piece of bread, cup of coffee, glass of
milk, etc. I was amazed at how awful I felt and how much the taste had
changed. I became a bloatboy or had swelling in my feet or went to sleep and
felt miserable.
