Atkins and Os

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

Hi
I noticed that Mary mentioned Atkins. I was REALLY struggling with weight
loss–have about 100 pounds to lose and stuck at 21–have followed Atkins
from a newspaper article which says first two weeks with minimal veg carbs
and no fuit and have lost 8 pounds–but my daughter is very upset about it
and says it will give me kidney failure because it is so high in fat and
protein–I am worried about ketosis but haven’t smelt any BO or Bad
Breath–I am drinking a lot of water and feel pretty good–low blood sugar,
excessive tiredness, and bad sleeping patterns have gone now that I am
eating snacks in between meals, –but still worried about the old
kidneys–has anybody got any evidence that your kidneys DON’t pack up on
Atkins. Also has made my psorasis a lot worse…assume it is all that
protein trying to get out!!
Thank you so much
Kae

First question

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

Hi to everyone,
I’m not new to the group but until now haven’t asked any questions (reading the
posts give an enormous amount of info)
My husband & I have been following the BTD for 15 months. He’s and O and I’m an
A, so mealtimes are fun! He has unknowingly been eating a type O diet for many
years, as any avoids would make him sick, so to find this group was brilliant.
Six months ago husband had a colonoscopy and biopsy. He was diagnosed with
Lymphocytic Colitis which is a form of Microscopic Colitis. (quite uncommon}
Saw three doctors. None had heard of it, didn’t know what it was, how he got it
or how to treat it.
Finally saw a gastro Dr. who told him there was no cure & he would be on
medication for the rest of his life. Prescribed Sulfasalazine 500mg, 8 - 10
tablets per day. (The list of side effects to this med. is a worry!)
He can only tolerate 1 tablet per day and this causes memory loss and nausea.
He suffers a lot with arthritis back pain, and muscle pain (this is quite common

Dehydration

Wednesday, October 19th, 2005

Mary Hilchie asked a question about water, forgive me if I have not been paying
close enough attention - lots going on at home this week.
But I seem to recall the original question was that she drinks plenty of water
and is still thirsty all the time.
If I have that right, Mary, I think you should be tested for diabetes. There
are various causes for adult-onset diabetes, and I don’t know your history, but
it is worth checking out. My husband was hit by a car this week (he’s OK!), the
driver was a 50-year old woman who had lapsed into a diabetic coma while
driving.
I don’t know much about diabetes, except that one of the symptoms is constant,
unexplainable thirst. Don’t mean to alarm you, but your water intake looked
sufficient to me. I didn’t have any advice for you till after this happened,
then I remembered that thirst can be a symptom. Maybe others on this list will
know more on this topic.

Cellulite/Dehydration

Try adding a 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. of sea salt to each glass of water. If you
need the sodium, the water will actually taste good to you lightly
salted. If you put too much, it will taste gross. Type Os tend to have
more of a problem with low blood pressure and high potassium than salt
sensitivity and high blood pressure.

How many eggs do you all eat? There was confusion as to if they were HB or
N, what is the latest? In the web page posted here about adrenal problems it
says eggs are an allergen. Any input?

Maggi

Monday, October 17th, 2005

Seasoning is a standard product found in almost every German
home. It also seems to be quite popular in Chinese, Thai, and Mexican
food.
Ingredients: Water, Hydrolyzed Corn Gluten and Soy Protein, Salt,
Artificial Flavor.
Soy sauce could be used to make up the bulk. The “artificial flavor”
part is the most trouble to emulate. Experimentation needed.

Steak Salad

Sunday, October 16th, 2005

I wanted to share this yummy dish with any of you that are looking for something
new! My sister passed it onto me knowing I eat a lot beef. It’s a traditional
german dish apparently but it uses “Maggi”. For those of you who know what
Maggi is, you’ll note that it’s probably an avoid but I think it could be
substituted easily so I’m working on that but I did have it the traditional way
and it was very good!
Steak Salad
1/4 cup Maggi (or substitute)
1/2 cup water
1 tbsp of crushed chili peppers
2 tbsps of lemon juice
steak - cut into thin strips
1/2 onion
lettuce (your choice) - cut into strips
Rice

Success

Sunday, October 16th, 2005

Hi,
I just wanted to pop in and tell that after about 3 weeks of ER, I’ve
lost 8 1/2 pounds. It’s a lot, but at first I suppose it’s to be
expected. And this rate will slow down.
I do drink 8 glasses of water each day plus cherry herbal tea. It
took only 3 days to give up coffee. I have no food cravings and
that’s a blessing that I’m grateful for. The Avoid foods are easy to
avoid when you don’t feel cravings for them.
I have a very long way to go in the area of weight loss. But the
energy boost and camlness that I feel is immediate. I expected to
feel more active. But the calm feeling was unexpected and a delight.
Yesterday, I went shopping and found large veal chops at the market.
This is on the menu for tonight. It’s a major treat. But we don’t eat
out very often. I like to cook, so I splurged. Also, it’s been years
since we’ve had veal due to the “calf” thing.

In praise of ostrich burgers

Saturday, October 15th, 2005

Did you find the ostrich burgers greasy at all? I’ve tried eating
lamb burgers, but they were very greasy. Buffalo burgers also seem
to be high in fat. Was thinking maybe the ostrich burgers wld be a
good replacement.

Hello
I’m 23 years old and have been enlisted in the US Air Force for about
5 years now. In the past, I have been active in martial arts and
exercise in general. However, my life changed dramatically last
December. At that time I began to experience increasingly bad
digestive problems. After two months of hospitalization, my doctor
diagnosed me with ulcerative colitis. Thanks to Prednisone (which
has a list of side-effects two pages long) I’m currently symptom
free. Unfortunately, the Air Force will probably discharge me by
August, since this disease is not considered “cured” until surgeons
remove my colon.
Anyway, I have some goals. I would like to weigh at least 150 lbs…
I’m 130 right now, which is too skinny for my 5′8″. Heh, I weighed
108 in the hospital. I want to achieve this through weight lifting
and proper diet. How does a type-O eat enough calories without
