appropriate pet food

Sunday, July 10th, 2005

I asked my vet what Fred (the dog) should be eating. She told me MEAT and
VEGETABLES. Should be very little starchy stuff like potatoes, also go light on
anything acidic, like tomatoes. And NO SWEET TREATS.
As I mainly follow the O diet closely, that is what I am already eating, so I
just make extra for Fred. I do leave out a bowl of commercial dog food, in case
he gets hungry when I’m not around. He nibbles at it now and then, I refill the
bowl about once a week. I do not know exact portion size, I have been giving
Fred the amount I would estimate for an energetic child of his size (35 lbs).
He has maintained his ideal weight of 35-38 lbs for 7 years, has never been
sick, and has the most beautiful, glossy, silky coat. I think if I was giving
him overly generous portions, he would be fat, and if I gave him stingy
portions, he would be gobbling the dry food out of hunger. Of course, he has
access all day to lots of fresh water, and he joins me 4-5 times per week for
big walks, hikes and rollerblading, so he gets lots of exercise. Some other
list members have made references to books and websites that give more detail

Buffalo and ostrich

Saturday, July 9th, 2005

<What is buffalo like?
Buffalo is wonderful if prepared medium-rare. The big danger is overcooking
it in which case the texture is compromised. I’ve used ground buffalo both
as yummy burgers and in my crock pot dishes and have been very satisfied.
Be careful though of the buffalo they sell in supermarkets now because the
fat content is much higher than the buffalo from the health food store
(probably to make it more palatable to the mass market). I’m sure the
buffalo you’ve bought directly from the farm is naturally very lean.
My latest discovery is ostrich burgers. As a non-secretor ostrich is highly
beneficial and the ostrich burgers I bought were wonderful with some Cajun
spices cooked on my George Forman grill. (I prefer all my red meat rare to
medium rare).
Enjoy your buffalo and your vacation,

Beefalo and Buffalo

Saturday, July 9th, 2005

Hi All,
I just purchased some organic grass fed beefalo from a farm just 15 minutes
north of where I live (found them doing an internet search, who knew). It
is frozen and I am leaving for vacation soon, so I will not be able to try
it until next week.
Has anyone tried beefalo? What is it like? Any suggestions for
preparation? I bought a sirloin steak and a porterhouse steak to try, as
well as some jerky.
There is a buffalo farm not far from here, don’t know what their farming
practices are yet. What is buffalo like?
Thanks,
Lynda

My cat drives me NUTS!

Saturday, July 9th, 2005

Gee…
You make me sound like some kindof negligent cat owner! I love me cat.
I play with her all day long. I play with her SO much that sometimes
she gets annoyed with me. I’m SO a cat person. Cats rule, dogs drool,
that’s what I always say. My cat would do well to eat any goldfish I
brought home. I go to school maybe three hours a day. The rest of the
time, I am at home with her. It’s just that I really value sleep, and
she seems bent on interrupting it. Maybe my problem is that I can’t
ignore her. If I could, then maybe I could get some rest!
Cheers,
Ryan

Ryan’s cat

Friday, July 8th, 2005

Ryan,
Cats are nocturnal animals, and most of the people I know who have cats
experience disruptions in their sleep. Karen B may be right also, that the
kitty wants you to get up and play. Even if you follow her suggestion, and give
your cat lots more attention and stimulation, I don’t know if that can solve the
problem. Your cat is probably sleeping all day, and that’s just normal.
I wonder if you should keep her out of the room and sleep with earplugs? Does
your cat have enough toys to play with on her own? I have found my vet to be a
good source of information when I have behavioral questions about my dogs and
rabbits, and I’m sure they can give you some insight into your cat too. There
may be changes you can make to kitty’s routine and relationship that will help
both of you cohabit more peacefully. By the way, I have found that in general,
veterinarians have an outlook on animal health and wellness that is far more
holistic, humane and advanced than we generally find in the physician community.
This is GENERALLY speaking of course, you need to visit lots of vets with your

We Love Newbies!

Friday, July 8th, 2005

When we were discussing negative traits I forgot one that I am curious about. Do
you or anyone have claw type toe nail/ nails ? When I was born it was the first
question my Dad’s family wanted asked- “Does Joyce have our “anon-name” toes? In
our family it’s only the little toe nails. I did- they are only attached at
the very base I can run a string behind then. It is narrow and pointy like an
animals. I’d say a cat’s , but it doesn’t retract! So it is more like a dogs or
bird. I do not file it to a point it’s naturally that way.
I showed them to a dermatologist who said he learned that it is familial and
comes from genetic-fungus
I don’t believe his because mine are smooth and do not look like fungus.
