White AND Brown Rice Are Bad?

Friday, February 18th, 2005

White rice is supposed to be generally bad for you because, lacking
fiber, it affects your blood sugar level. However, the phytic acid in
the fiber of brown rice is supposed decreases mineral absorption.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Rice is a grain — or is it not ?!?

Friday, February 18th, 2005

I see a lot of people on here eating rice, yet not eating “grains”
which I assume to mean wheat and it relatives (oats/rye/etc). I
always thought rice was considered a grain as well. That should also
includes corn and even bamboo shoots as both are grass related.
I don’t eat any of the above, but would love to start eating brown
rice + beans again both of which I’ve been avoding. I do *very* well
with them. So…What is the reasoning behind not eating one type of
grain but eating another?

Meal Plan/Eggs

Thursday, February 17th, 2005

Amy, you have to find your own way to apply the principles of this
program to your own life.
For me, I was borderline Chronic Fatigue, sleeping only 3 - 4 hours a
night for a couple of years, completely exhausted and brain fogged. I
was days away from … taking my own life I was so miserable. (Not an
exaggeration here. I had been going to medical doctors and the
problem only got worse.) I thank God for my friend that follows this
program (although type A) and took the time to listen.
I couldn’t think, couldn’t work… I’m know that I’m not far from that
place, it takes time to turn around the damage done - just from the
lack of sleep, not to mention the poor food choices! I was working
out with a trainer for about a year before I started this program,
eating lots of chicken and dairy and fruit, pretty much a full year of
no highly beneficial foods (beef, spinach, salt water fish…) My
naturopath ran a thyroid test and compared it to previous results.

Welcome Amy Martinez

Thursday, February 17th, 2005

Hello Amy and welcome to this list. I can see that like everyone else, at first
you are completely overwhelmed, not to mention confused by all this info that is
contrary to everything you were ever taught. Here is my 2 cents, to help you
along:
1. You asked for our various experiences: I am a 43 year old woman, possibly
have MS (hard to diagnose), otherwise in excellent health and very active, even
though my vision is now compromised. I’m 5′1″ and weigh 125 lbs. In late ‘98,
I started this eating plan. During ‘99 I lost 27 lbs, and have no trouble
maintaining my weight. I no longer lose weight, but continue to grow more lean
and have gone down two sizes just from leanness. Including weight loss, went
down 4 sizes.
2. I am also very athletic: biking, hiking, rollerblading mostly. I may be
eating more than 35% carbs, I don’t measure exactly. I do adjust the eating
plan to my individual chemistry, activity level, and time contraints. I am
probably 85-90% compliant.

fresh fish, etc.

Thursday, February 17th, 2005

Hi O’s !,, Do HFS’s have to follow the same standards with their fresh
meat/fish that the supermarkets have to? Everytime I buy meat or fish at
the PCC (Puget Consumer Coop) I get stomach reactions to it ! Has anyone
tried Dr. D’s green drink mix yet? or read the encyclopedia? Feedback
would be great ! Love, Leslie

Complex carbohydrates before bed helps you sleep. Oatmeal is a very
good example of a complex carbohydrate. Oatmeal (and spelt) are
avoids for non-secretors so another complex carbohydrate can be
substituted.
“Nocturnal hypoglycemia is a major cause of insomnia, in particular
sleep maintenance insomnia (waking in the middle of the night, unable
to get back to sleep.) When there is a drop in the blood glucose
level, it cause the release of hormones that regulate glucose levels,
such as adrenaline, glucagon, cortisol and growth hormone. These
compounds stimulate the brain. They are a natural signal that it is
time to eat.
Many people in the US suffer from faulty glucose metabolism, either
hypoglycemia or diabetes, because of overeating refined carbohydrates.
Good bedtime snacks to keep blood sugar levels steady throughout the

AMY AND KATHY RE PROTEIN/BREAKFAST/SNACKS/R&B

Wednesday, February 16th, 2005

I still feel confused
about servings, 1-6 a week????? I eat about 6 a day!
What do you have? What about snacks?
I think my biggest problem is snacks, breakfast, and also the cost of buying
meat, and I surely can’t afford organic. Thanks again Amy
I honestly pay little attention to # of servings per week, just try to keep
the proportions correct. If you micromanage your diet (like on some other
lists) it becomes an obsession and a chore. It should just come naturally
after awhile.
This is only my personal opinion, I am abut 70% compliant overall. Some days
100%, some days 50%…
BREAKFAST: EGGS, OATMEAL, NATURAL SMOKED TURKEY BACON/SAUSAGE. I ALSO EAT
DINNER LEFTOVERS (FISH, MEAT, ETC).
SNACKS: SOY NUTS,FRUIT,TOMATO,RAW VEGGIES (CELERY,CARROTS,BROCCOLI,ETC)
SPELT PRETZELS, GOAT CHEESE, COMPLIANT CHOCOLATE (I WILL NOT GIVE IT UP).

Selzer/Club Soda Water; Idahoan; Treadmills??

Wednesday, February 16th, 2005

Hi Gay,
I’m just now catching up on e-mail from being gone over Thanksgiving.
Another Idahoan here, we live in SE Idaho in Idaho Falls. Where is Naples,
ID?
I too am not able to run outside now with the snow and icy streets. We do
enjoy snow skiing, both downhill and x-country, and snow shoeing so I’ll get
lots of activity in on the weekends! During the week though I need to be
more diligent. We have an old Nordic Track ski machine that I really like
but it’s not working very well and I need to get it fixed. I’ve had it on
my “list” to order the parts for a month now, so I’d better do it today!
I’d LOVE to get a treadmill too for variety. We travel pretty often and I
always love to run on the treadmill in the hotel workout rooms. We also
have some free weights and a bench that we use a couple of times a week. I
got a pretty good workout shoveling snow yesterday too!
Does anyone know if the less expensive (under ~$300 or so) treadmills work
