The Olympics

I’m an Aussi so I am biased. The reconcilliation thing with the opening
ceremony (the black/white thing) was a master stroke that will change our
culture. There has been a lot of aggressive nonsense going on that just
causes people to entrench in their racial positions, but this ceremony
achieved reconcilliation without kitch or patronage or cowtowing to
political correctness. So I thought it was marvellous. I’d love to hear
what you guys think.
It is interesting for the whole Olympics to have gone so well because we are
a culture that denigrates itself, and we were sure we would mess it up - but
in the final analysis I think we put the rest of the world on notice.
Coming 4th in the medal count is nothing short of miraculous considering our
population size.
So we are all rather proud of ourselves at the moment.

Doubt it. NZ would get swallowed up. We already have some preferences -
can move between the two countries without passports and can take up
residence without visas etc. Sharing a currency would make sense, but
economically the two countries seem to be on different cycles - when NZ is
up we are down etc, so I don’t think they would want to give away their
independence too fast and become just another State of Australia.
But look at our rugby team to see how far the integration has gone! ;-) Christine

    Hi Christine,
I echo that comment. But, thank goodness, now I can get a good night’s
sleep. I kept the TV on in my bedroom most nights and when I woke up in the
middle of the night and there was something interesting on, I would watch it.
Especially, the men’s tennis doubles and some of the basketball games. We
are 15 hours behind you, so I spend several nights without enough sleep.

And we staged all the major events at night just for your benefit (or at
least, for the Americans) I hope you realise. There was actually a bit of a
furore about it mucking up our athletes body chemistry - but that does not
seem to have been the case.

Maybe that’s what our athletes are doing wrong, they usually train and
    compete during the day. LOL
