Re:
Hi,
My name is Pam and I am a type O, and I am 55. I subscribe to the ER4YT-O
list as well as the Sears/Dadamo list. From what I have read, it seems that
the O’s have the most difficulty loosing weight, often have arthritis, and
CFS/FMS. I sure quality on all three of these points. I have had moderately
severe fibromyalgia for at least 6 years, and probably much longer. I was
eating a no fat no meat high carbohydrate diet for almost a year, which
resulted in a good weight loss….UNTIL. My metabolism slowed to a virtual
halt, my fibromyalgia symptoms escalated until I had no choice but to seek
medical help. And guess what, there is none to speak of. I had a bilateral
hip replacement three years ago. My knees are bad, as well as my neck and
back. I find myself VERY carbohydrate sensitive, with pretty severe cravings
unless I virtually eliminate most of my carbohydrates. I cannot but wonder
if my “good intentioned” diet exacerbated my health issues? I am doing my
best to eliminate the “avoid” foods totally and concentrating on the protein.
The one thing that has made a difference in my strength and my pain factor
is the exercise. I still HATE it, but I do it anyway. I work out three days
a week at the gym, concentrating on building up my strength and keeping my
knees and back moving and flexible. It hurts but it has made me stronger.
Two days a week I have a program at home, and the other two days I just try
to keep active as possible. I work at home about 80% of the time. And of
course it is computer work which tends to keep me too sedentary for an O. My
physical limitations keep me from doing extra walking, skiing, dancing etc.
So I concentrate on what I can do and try to learn what I can from others
experiences. I would be interested to hear if any other O’s have had similar
experiences. Thanks in advance for your input.

Dear Pam…your letter spoke loudly to me..I’m type O and have been on the
D’Adamo program for a year now and it has really taught me the effects food
can have on the body. My symptoms have decreased alot and some have
disappeared but the effects of rheumatoid arthritis continue. Recently I
purchased a book called ‘The Immune System Cure” and I am about to embark on
it along with my blood type diet…fibromalysia and arthritis are well
covered in the book and since I read the Eat Right book and felt really
inspired and hopeful and dedicated, I now find those same feelings toward
this new information. I wanted to tell you about it so you would at least
know of its existence. The authors are Vanderhaege and Bouic. I had to get
it from Canada but since then I learned it can be purchased from
www.kensingtonbooks.com

Dear Lee,
Would love to hear more about your progress with the new book, the Type O
plan, and the RA. I have made considerable progress regaining the use of my
hands and feet in the past year since I have been folloiwng the Type O plan -
and find that the closer I stick to it, the better I feel. I still take an
awful lot of medication and my goal is to be able to cut back on some of
that.
In January it took careful effort to hold a pen and sign my name — and I am
an accountant. I am now able to garden, work in the yard and house, and my
job is still intact. I am starting some yoga programs that I can handle - no
impact and off my feet!
What does the new author advocate?
Interested,

Dear Betsy,
I feel so good to have someone interested in what I am exploring and
doing..thank you. My RA got so bad I had to quit work about 3 years ago and
now am on disability and living with my son and his family..I’m 60 and want
my life back…I was a naturalist..vegetarian for 17 years and found out that
the best of intentions are not always good for us (especially type O) in the
long run..I was told that the abence of animal protien left me severly
depleted in necessary nutrients. I lost alot of wght when this started about
5 years ago and was afraid to take any meds for fear of getting other
problems assoc with the meds. I do take advil and have taken less since the
blood type diet and have even gone for a couple of months without it which
says alot for the d’adamo diet. I do instinctively know there has to be an
answer to stop the progression, pain and swelling and I have been passionate
about researching answers. I wish there was a web site where you could read
the testamonials of people that bought the book and I even talked with a
woman who said her husband followed the regime and you’d never even notice he
had had RA. The premise of the book is to balance the immune system as in RA
it is overactive and attacking the joints..I often have asked my doctor
why..if it was normal once then why can’t I bring it back to normality and he
didn’t have an answer and even chuckled at my inquisitiveness. There are
slues of recommendations and you have to be the one to decide but most
importantly the answer is plant sterols and sterinols that bring the T cells
back into balance by enhancing the production of TH1 cells..from the book
“sterols and sterinols regulate or modify the immune response when it is
overactive”. Sterinols are plant fats . I will receive my first bottle of
Sterinol also called Moducare in about 5 days and will keep a day to day
record of changes. For some people the immune system kicks in right away and
some longer..the woman I talked to said her husband ’s system took 6 weeks.
I have also read that people take their meds at first and then are able to
wean themselves off. I look forward to the possibilities the sterinols
offer..the book covers a vast amt of info..foods, fats/oils, supplements,
herbs, and much more.(many foods contain the sterols and sterinols). I am
already taking much of what is recommended and my foods from the blood type
diet are quite compatible except for the amt of beef I eat. There is also
good info on the importance of acid alkaline balance and cleansing the body.
Alot of the info I knew but here and there the author gave additional info
which helped to crystalize the importance of how much and how long before
things kick in..I really was excited about alot in the book and it gave me
answers to questions that I have been told..there are no answers.
I was also fascinated in reading that the study of immunology has heightened
because of the aids epidemic which started about 20 years ago.
Overall…with all the things I done to arrest this ravaging of my body..the
blood type diet has made the most profound difference and I feel strongly
that understanding the immune system..what it is, how it works, what has gone
wrong and what I can do to remedy that wrongness is of paramount importance.
boy, I sure got long winded with this letter..my friends would like to get
mail like this from me…Thanks again for your interest….LEE

Have you tried Knox gelatin? Cheap and works wonders for some people. I got
a friend that has RA in his fingers, which were badly twisted and very painful.
He has been taking a little gelatin every morning and was pain free in just a
few
weeks. I don’t know if his fingers will eventually straighten out or not. We’ll
see.
He has been on it for about 4 months now and he is impressed. Available at any
grocery store.

Thanks, Dick –
The Knox gelatin sounds like a “might help and can’t hurt” to me. It’s
supposed to be a source of additional protein and is neutral for O’s. Will
try it. I wish your friend the best with it. I have been treated so far by
a rheumatologist (who actually is more total person oriented than most) and
also am participating in a drug trial study. The goal of the trial drug is
not to reverse the disease itself but to prevent progressive damage to the
joints. Once deformed and eroded, no, they don’t repair themselves. At the
one year mark in June, their evaluation said there had been no additional
damage since the previous June. Of course, on these studies you don’t know
if you are getting the drug or a placebo. That year also corresponds pretty
closely to the year that I have been following the Type O plan.
A lot of the discomfort from RA is the tendonitis associated with it. At
present I am not plaqued with swelling in the joints, but too much exertion
on any joint will cause the tendons to flare up. I start most days stiff and
moving slowly. And I hate wondering “should I?” whenever I want to do
something. I relate very strongly to what Lee wrote. I am 62 years old, a
scuba diving instructor, have done skilled arts and crafts all my life with
my hands and “I want my life back!” Besides that I need my job. So I am
willing to investigate any promising alternatives.
Thanks,
Betsy

before but it got lost in the in a maze of other info. it surely won’t hurt
and I have NOTHING to lose by doing it…THANKS AGAIN..Lee

Jeanie,
Good luck with that baby! I too have heard about the fillings causing a
problem. Dr, Hula Clark has written about the effects of parasites and
pollutants in our systems in her “A Cure For All Diseases” book. It is worth
the money for anyone who is having extra trouble with any health issue.

Nope. My guess it is worse. Sickness is a big business for doctors. What
would happen if we could all heal ourselves? Or at least 90% of our illness.
My nephew is a surgeon and I am sure that he would think that I am crazy for
eating this way. But since he lives half way across the US, he doesn’t know.
We have to take responsibility for our own health. And educate ourselves
the best we can. And this list is a blessing for us all. At the very list
it gives us suggestions to check out and to think about.

Butter is OK for Type O’s. You can also use olive oil (highly beneficial) as
a dipping oil. Ghee is clarified butter. Butter is neutral for “O”s. I
don’t know what MFC is.

Sherry,
I get my information on dairy from page 59 of “Eat Right 4 Your Type”. Dr.
D’Adamo says there are no highly beneficial dairy foods for “O”s, but there
are a few neutral ones. I gave up regular dairy intake about 25 yrs. ago,
and it was a real relief!! Are you lactose intolerant? My mother is B
negative and is lactose intolerant.

Hi Lynn,
It only lasted one day, and I have felt really good since.
I have had symptoms of lightheadedness and headache at times, and
sometimes I feel shaky, which doesn’t make sense, since I am eating good
protein and vegetables. Of course, up until last week I was eating lots of
chocolate every day, and pita bread (whole wheat)! There is something else
that I hesitated to put on here, but what the heck! One day I had a lot of
dicomfort in the lower abdomen, and then kept passing large amounts of mucus.
(Now, doesn’t that make everyone’s day? I hope you’re not eating your
breakfast!)
Wheat had been a mainstay of my diet, along with dairy. In the last
week I think I’ve lost a couple pounds (I don’t have a scale, but the
clothes are fitting looser). I’d like to lose a few more, but don’t want to
get very thin, so I’m going to be sure and include a lot from the neutral
list.
I’m going to try and follow the supplement recommendations, but I still
don’t understand about no vitamin D. I am postmenopausal, and at risk for
osteoporosis (went into early menopause at 37), and my doctor has said that
vitmain D is essential along with calcium.
I’m wondering what calcium supplements everyone is taking?

Hello steve and all others
I would appreciate any assistance with the following project and for those who
would be interested in sharing their way of thinking with me can e-mail me at
Elize.Combrink@… - posting on this site might not be the type of
information all would be interested in, for that reason I kindly request those
who would be prepared to chat to me re the above to just send me a blank e-mail
so that I can communicate via personal e-mail rather than posting on ER4YT
I work for Eskom the electricity utility of SA - currently having about 32 000
employees.
The company being very progressive in their thinking has launched a Spiritual
Awareness programme. The programme includes mental, physical, enmotional and
spiritual wellness. We all know how interlinked all of these aspects are. My
personal interest in anthropolgy and research around many related aspects has
taken me to various areas, tribes and cultures across the world for the past 10
years. I was requested to head the research team to accumulate information so
that we can produce a company policy to address the programme.
We need to be able to accommodate people from all faiths, beliefs, religions,
cultures etc and diet and food plays a very important role within many groups.
Aspects of why some people use their hands whilst eating versus using utensils
etc is also important as it has a link to certain health aspects. How foods can
influence behaviour patterns, how people with CFS or other diseases can be
accommodated within the work environmet - here I think info re the chaning world
of work can be included, working from home the pro’s and cons etc
All of the above will assist us to help people to lead a active but quality
life.
The SA government will also use the above policy as a guideline to inspire other
companies to do the same.
Thanks in advance and hope to hear from some of you.
Blessings

Hello Alice
This is a list of people like yourself - we are all asking questions and
sometimes we have answers for one another. There are no officials handing
out answers. If no-one has a response to something you have said, no-one
will respond.
One of the keys to getting diet right is to trust your own body and behave
as naturally as possible for your genetic type. When in nature would you
ever fast on lemon juice and maple syrup? The throat and mouth problems
could have resulted from many things, and if you are going to do something
as radical as a severe fast you should probably see a naturopath to work
with you through it.
All the best, Christine

Hi Lise, I’d been having this problem as well. I had run out
of multi/minerals and calcium. Started having leg cramps. I was told it was
probably due to calcium/magnesium/potassium deficiency. Well, I stocked up and
started taking them again and leg cramps have gone. Also, I think it was on
live-right list foks were talking about water. The recommended amount to drink
was 1/2 of your body weight in ounces. Well, I weigh 140 and so should be
drinking 70 ounces a day. I was drinking about 90-100 ounces. Apparently if
you’re drinking too much water, you will lose minerals from your body. Anyway, I
decided to cut back a little on the water, so far so good!
Lilla
I have recently been experiencing strong muscle contractions (’cramps’)
in
my legs, even at night when sleeping. Can anybody think of a
reason
connected to the O diet which could cause this, or is it due to lack of
some
mineral. Is it due to lack of salt ?
On something else, I think it was Thomas who said in a mail that the O
diet
should typically consist of 45% meat. Is that 45% of daily
calories?
Many thanks

You have to be careful with measurements and conversions when going from
volumes to weights and back—like cups to ml to pounds to grams. Most of them
are based on the volume and weight of water. Olive oil is close enough but if
you had a cup of spinach, it would not weigh as much as a cup of water. That
being said:
1 cup=8 ounces=236.6 ml
1 pound=453.59 grams
1 ounce=28.35 grams (water)
1 tablespoon=14.79 ml
Hope this helps.

Nope, bummer man. You’re not only fighting the coffee addiction but the
habit and the social setting. I was a heavy coffee drinker for 30+ years and
virtually lived on it in the military. Coffee and a cigarette were breakfast
for
most of my adult life. Green tea just didn’t fill the void then.
Chocolate is a neutral, by the way, so I’m assuming you’re talking about the
coffee. It took me a long time to wean myself off of coffee. You’ve been on
the diet for a while so try going for 2 weeks without and then have a blitz
day where you suck down as many of those little addictive bombs as you want.
Hopefully, it’ll make you so sick you’ll see what they do to you. You may have
to yo yo for a while but you’ll eventually realize the benefit.
Over time I have lapsed from time to time (you’re jonesing me right now!)
because sometimes coffee smells just too good to pass by but I drink it so
seldom
compared to the past and, yes, it always makes me sick just like the doctor
says.
Just keep trying. You’ll eventually quit.

Hi Michael,
I found that the way I quit coffee is to start adding water to it. Instead
of milk I put an equal amount of hot water. Gradually, I increased the hot
water until I wasn’t drinking very much coffee in it and, eventually,
stopped all together and substituted green tea.
Good Luck,

I found it hard to break the habit of relaxing over a hot drink. Perhaps try
a great cocoa powder with an OK milk product (not cow milk). Or find a tea
you like. Hang in there.
I quit coffee cold turkey after being addicted to it, because I was trying
to get pregnant and the headaches nearly killed me. I had withdrawl for 3
weeks after that. I transitioned to hot cocoa, this was before I was off cow
milk. Ghiradelli makes great mixes that are sold in my grocery stores. Or
buy unsweetened dutch cocoa and add sugar when making your own cup. Just an
idea.
